Ravi Kavasery, MD, is vice president, chief medical officer of provider performance, quality, and affordability (interim) at Blue Shield of California, a nonprofit health plan with over $24 billion in annual revenue, serving over 4.8 million members in the state's commercial, individual, and government markets. Dr. Kavasery is responsible for the affordability, quality, and performance of Blue Shield's provider network. As a leading nonprofit health plan with nearly five million members, Blue Shield's mission is relentlessly focused on ensuring all Californians have access to high quality health care at an affordable price.

Dr. Kavasery is a seasoned physician executive with over a decade of experience leading population health and transformation in care delivery. He joined Blue Shield in 2021 as vice president, cost of health care, where he led a strategic and programmatic approach to reduce health care spending and deliver higher quality care at lower cost to Blue Shield’s members. Prior to Blue Shield, he served as medical director of quality and population health for AltaMed Health Services – one of the nation’s largest federally qualified health centers. Until 2018, he was medical director of clinical development and performance for Iora Health, a primary care group renowned for its innovative care delivery model. As one of the earliest physicians to join Iora Health, Dr. Kavasery led a multi-disciplinary team in the development and implementation of the Iora care model nationally.

Dr. Kavasery served for six years as associate faculty member with the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School as well as an associate faculty member with Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation founded by

Dr. Atul Gawande between Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Kavasery is a published author in peer review and non-peer review publications and an invited guest lecturer and presenter throughout the country.

Dr. Kavasery received his undergraduate degree with honors from Johns Hopkins University, and his medical degree with honors from Yale University. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was a clinical fellow at Harvard Medical School. During his clinical training, Dr. Kavasery has collaborated with Partners in Health in Rwanda and Malawi. He has also done clinical work in Uganda, the Navajo Nation, South Korea, Malaysia, and Argentina. He is a board-certified internist and continues to see patients regularly in East Los Angeles.
