  • When are COVID-19 tests covered?

Most diagnostic and screening tests are covered for the majority of Blue Shield members. This includes at-home over-the-counter test kits. Coverage varies by plan type.

  • What’s the difference between the booster shot and the additional dose?

They are basically the same. Additional doses are given to “boost” the immune response from the vaccine. Some people with weakened immune systems may need a boost just to get a response that most people get from the regular dose. Others may need a boost due to the vaccine becoming less effective over time.

  • Should I still postpone preventive visits/routine checkups or specialist care?

No. Health screenings, immunizations, and annual checkups can all be safely resumed. If you regularly visit a specialist to manage a chronic condition, you should keep those appointments.

It’s important not to fall behind on preventive care visits. Annual exams can help you:

    • Understand your current health status,
    • Get basic screening tests, and
    • Get any needed immunizations.

These exams also help your primary doctor see any health issues early on. This makes it easier to treat and improve the outcome.

Feel free to ask your doctor’s office what safety steps they are taking to protect patients during the pandemic. Your doctor may also be offering virtual visits if you prefer.
