Protect your community: Meet Dolores Huerta
“The #Vaccine is safe, effective, and prevents serious illness. Flex your defense when it is your turn.” – Dolores Huerta
Dolores Huerta is a labor leader and civil rights activist. She is the founder and president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. She is also a co-founder of the National Farmworkers Association, which became the United Farm Workers after merging with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in 1966.
While many across the country have suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hispanic/Latino communities have been hit especially hard. Hispanic/Latino Californians represent 44% of the COVID-19 deaths in the state but are only 39% of the population. In some areas, like L.A. County, Hispanic/Latino residents are dying at a rate three times higher than White residents.
Important reasons to get vaccinated
Many factors put California’s population – including Hispanic/Latino communities – at higher risk for getting infected with COVID-19.
These may include:
- Living in a home.
- Being an essential worker (Hispanic/Latino residents make up 41.5% of California’s essential workers.)
- Little or no access to health care.
- Language barriers.
The State of California is working to help remove some of these blocks to getting vaccinated. The My Turn website is available in 12 languages, including English and Spanish. Also, the Hotline is available in English and Spanish. The hotline can be reached at (833) 422-4255. It is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Vaccines are key to preventing infection and keeping all of us healthy, including Hispanic/Latino communities. To inspire others, Huerta filmed herself getting her first dose of the Moderna vaccine earlier this year.
“I received my first #COVID-19 vaccine courtesy of Dr. Joaquin Arambula, in Del Rey, CA yesterday!” she wrote on Instagram. “The #Vaccine is safe, effective, and prevents serious illness. Flex your defense when it is your turn.”
