Information on American Kidney Fund’s decision to leave California

The American Kidney Fund (AKF) recently announced the closure of its Health Insurance Premium Program in California. The program offers assistance to eligible Californians to help pay for health insurance premiums.

The AKF blames the closure in the state on the passage of a new healthcare bill, AB 290. However, the Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) says the bill allows for the AKF to continue providing help in California.

AB 290 takes effect on January 1, 2020. The AKF will continue to accept applications for assistance until December 13, 2019. It says it will make payments on those applications by December 31, 2019.
