For 2019 plan year

The deadline for filing your taxes is Monday, April 15, 2020.

The Individual Shared Responsibility Payment does not apply when you file your federal and state taxes. This payment is more commonly known as the tax penalty, or fine, or individual mandate. In previous years, it has been issued to those who chose not to buy coverage unless they were granted an exception.

However, when you file your taxes in April, you’ll still need to confirm that you had qualified health coverage.

For 2020 plan year

Effective January 1, 2020, a new mandate will require California residents to have health coverage every month throughout 2020. If not, a state tax penalty may apply (unless you’re granted an exception). This mandate does not apply to your federal taxes. You won’t file taxes for the 2020 plan year until April 2021.
