What is Medicare Part D?

  • Medicare Part D is a standalone prescription plan.
  • It’s also known as a PDP.
  • It provides prescription drug coverage not included in Medicare Parts A and B.
  • There are 2 ways to get Medicare Part D coverage:
How can I tell if a PDP is right for me?
I only have Original Medicare

A PDP offers the prescription coverage not included in Medicare Parts A and B (medical and hospital).

I only have a Medicare Supplement plan

Medicare Supplement plans just cover out-of-pocket medical costs. A PDP offers the prescription coverage you need.

I’m switching off a Medicare Advantage plan

If you’re leaving a Medicare Advantage plan, you’ll need to add a standalone PDP to keep your prescription coverage. Note: You may face a late-enrollment penalty if you go over 63 days without prescription drug coverage.

Compare Blue Shield’s Prescription Drug plans

Blue Shield offers two PDP plans that balance up front premium costs with costs for services. Lower premiums come with a higher annual deductible. That means you pay out of pocket for prescriptions until the annual deductible is met.
