Hearing benefits never sounded this good

Hearing loss affects a growing portion of adults in the United States. It can make it hard to hear alarms and doorbells, understand doctor instructions, and even everyday conversations. Hearing aids can boost the clarity and volume of what you hear.

Covered benefits for eligible members

This benefit is available to Blue Shield of California members enrolled in the following plans:

  • Medicare Supplement Plan F Extra
  • Medicare Supplement Plan G Extra
  • Medicare Supplement Plan G Inspire in Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Kings, Lake, Lassen, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Modoc, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Benito, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tuolumne, Yolo, and Yuba counties
  • Blue Shield Inspire (HMO) in Los Angeles, Orange, Alameda, and San Mateo counties
  • Blue Shield 65 Plus in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties
  • Blue Shield 65 Plus Choice Plan (HMO) in San Bernardino and Riverside counties

Hearing aid services

All non-Medicare covered hearing aid services must be provided by the in-network hearing aid provider, EPIC Hearing Healthcare. Coverage includes:

  • Routine hearing exam
  • Hearing aid instrument
  • Choice of private-labeled Basic (mid-level) or Reserve (premium-level) technology hearing aid models
  • Up to two hearing aids per year available in the following styles:
    • In the ear
    • In the canal
    • Completely in canal
    • Behind the ear
    • Receiver in the ear
  • All technology levels include:
    • One consultation
    • Two-year supply of batteries per hearing aid
    • Three-year extended warranty
  • Basic technology level hearing aids include:
    • One behind-the-ear hearing aid delivered directly to your home
    • Follow-up care is provided by EPIC online, by video chat, or over the phone for no additional fee
    • Follow-up care in-person appointments are subject to an additional fee per visit
  • Reserve technology level hearing aids include:
    • One hearing aid delivered in-person
    • Up to three follow-up visits in-person for hearing aid fitting, consultation, device check, and adjustment within the first year for no additional fee
    • Ear impressions and molds

How to get started with your hearing benefits

Contact an EPIC hearing counselor to activate your referral before visiting a participating provider. Services provided by out-of-network providers will not be covered. Call EPIC directly at (888) 370-8949 (TTY:711), Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6p.m. Pacific time to get started.
