Meet Heesun, a graduate from our Shield Emerging Leader program, a two-year rotational program aimed at growing future leaders. She is now working to transform health care through innovation and technology. Watch the video about her experience.
Tell us about the Shield Emerging Leader program.
After graduating from the program and becoming a manager in the Health Innovation and Technology department, I realized how useful my past experience was while working through a recent idea on our internal innovation platform.
Now I get to take the knowledge, network, and skills I created over the past two years and use them to solve problems through innovation and technology. Like Steve Jobs said, "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards." Looking back, I see how valuable each role was to my overall experience and growth. It really gave me a unique and holistic perspective in thinking of opportunities and solutions for achieving our mission.
How have you developed at Blue Shield?
Changing roles and teams every six months forces you to grow quickly, adapt to changes and be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I've become a stronger leader and systems thinker, and presenter. I believe in myself more. I couldn't have done this without the support of the program leaders, their teams, my co-workers in the program and the organization as a whole.
What makes you happy?
My friends and family mean the world to me. I care a lot about them, and I really value maintaining those relationships.
And as you see in the video, I volunteer on the weekends with Minds Matter San Francisco, which is a San Francisco-based nonprofit helping high school students from low-income families broaden their dreams and do well in college. This is super rewarding for me because I received a lot of guidance throughout my career, and mentoring lets me to pay it forward.
What are three things you can't live without?
My friends, my family (including my dog, Hyori), and like any good Millennial, my iPhone! Bonus: I'm also sucker for board games, so if anyone wants to play Avalon, feel free to reach out!
