LGBTQ Health
Though lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) individuals have similar health concerns as the general population, they have more chronic conditions, earlier disabilities onsets, and many barriers to accessing health care. These challenges include stigma, discrimination, violence, rejection by family and community, and inequality in or denial of care.
The good news: the Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides the LGBTQ community access to health coverage including special protections when dealing with sexual orientation and gender identity. The recent federal recognition of same-sex marriage (the overturning of DOMA) also paves the way for new health coverage options.
