Greg Buchert, MD, MPH, is president and chief executive officer of Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan, a nonprofit managed care company based in Los Angeles County. Buchert is responsible for ensuring access to quality care for Blue Shield Promise’s nearly 500,000 members, managing the health plan’s Medi-Cal and dual eligibles’ growth strategy and integration with Blue Shield of California.
Buchert has more than 30 years of healthcare experience, including managed care health plans, medical group management, hospital administration, and information technology vendor services. He most recently served as chief medical officer at Health Net, Inc., a Centene Corporation company with nearly 3 million California members. He joined Centene in 2013 to become the first plan president and chief executive officer of California Health & Wellness, a health plan launched that same year to serve members of the state’s Medi-Cal managed care program.
Prior to his work at Centene, Buchert was principal at Health Management Associates, one of the nation’s leading healthcare research and consulting organizations. He was also part of the founding executive team that created and launched CalOptima, a large public health plan in Orange County, where he served as chief operating officer. He previously held management and clinical positions at two hospitals as a pediatric emergency physician.
Buchert received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, and his Master of Public Health in health care administration from Tulane University School of Public Health. He earned a bachelor’s degree in community health and delivery of health services, as well as in psychology, from Tufts University. He received a Special Achievement Award for Pediatric Advocacy from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
