Karen Xie is chief technology officer and senior vice president at Blue Shield of California, a $20 billion health insurance plan with more than 4.3 million individual, commercial, and government members statewide.

As chief technology officer, Xie directs and develops Blue Shield’s overall technology vision and execution that will enable Blue Shield to grow its business and transform the healthcare ecosystem, bringing it into the digital age. She leads the areas of enterprise architecture, health innovation technology, data services, and quality engineering services.

Xie has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Before joining Blue Shield in 2014, she spent 16 years at Trinity Health, a Michigan-based Catholic health system serving 22 states and 94 hospitals. There, she served as vice president of enterprise architecture and innovation.

Earlier in her career, Xie was a research scientist at Columbia University. She holds a PhD in physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts, and a bachelor of science and master of science in physics from Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China. She has published over 20 scientific research papers in internationally renowned magazines. In 2016, Xie received the California Diversity Council’s Most Powerful and Influential Woman Award for Northern California.
