Karen Xie, PhD, is senior vice president and chief technology officer at Blue Shield of California, a nonprofit health plan with over $20 billion in annual revenue serving over 4 million members in the state’s commercial, individual, and government markets. Dr. Xie directs and develops overall technology vision and execution to enable business growth and healthcare ecosystem transformation. She oversees the company’s business, information, and technology architecture, in addition to quality engineering testing, software configuration, release management, and robotic process automation. Dr. Xie also leads Health Innovation Technology, where she drives technology-enabled innovation to support business growth and healthcare ecosystem transformation.

Dr. Xie is recognized as a dynamic leader who gets results and builds high-performing teams. She has over 20 years of IT experience in the healthcare industry. Prior to joining Blue Shield in 2014, she served as vice president of Enterprise Architecture and Innovation at Trinity Health, a Michigan-based national health system. During her 16-year tenure, she held a variety of technology leadership roles, and built Trinity Health’s first Innovation Lab. The Lab garnered the organization recognition as a top-five healthcare provider, receiving InformationWeek’s Innovation 500 Award.

Dr. Xie serves on the Advisory Board of University of California at Riverside in the Design Thinking Executive Program, and is a member of the Cross-Functional Executive Talent Council at Blue Shield. She has received numerous awards, including the San Francisco Business Times’ Bay Area’s Most Influential Women award, and the California Diversity Council’s Most Powerful and Influential Woman Award for her sustained record of professional accomplishments and community leadership.

The technology leadership magazine Sync has featured Dr. Xie for her work driving digital innovation in the healthcare ecosystem. American Healthcare Leader magazine featured her successes in bringing enterprise architecture rigor to business growth and transformation, and she was also featured in Becker’s Payer Issues for her leadership in executing a $20 billion payer’s technology strategy to enable healthcare ecosystem transformation.

Dr. Xie earns a doctorate degree in physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, launching her career as a research scientist in quantum machines at Columbia University. She earned a master's degree and a bachelor's degrees in physics from Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China, and is a graduate of the Stanford Executive Program in Leadership. Dr. Xie has published over 25 novel scientific research papers in internationally renowned journals and magazines.
