Prior to open enrollment, individual Californians will be able to go onto the Covered California website and see exactly how much each of the different health plan options will cost them. Many people will find that plans for 2014 coverage, after adjusting for inflation and accounting for premium assistance, are about the same or even lower than what they pay now, or affordable enough that they can buy coverage for the first time.
Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), everyone will have access to coverage in 2014. For the first time, people with pre-existing conditions and those who could not afford health insurance will now be covered. This will be good for Californians, but it comes at a cost.
While most would agree that the new rating rules are more equitable, the transition will result in lots of rate changes when compared with members’ current coverage.
